It’s for hardcore players, but that’s one of the requests we get from a small percentage of our audience. It becomes very nerve-wracking to go down into tombs knowing that if you die, you have go all the way back to the campsite. As before, we have the Survivor mode, where you have harder enemies and greater resource scarcity, but in Extreme mode you can only save at campsites. Being able to bring some of that co-op gameplay into the Tomb Raider franchise was exciting.Īnother small addition is the Extreme Survivor mode. At Crystal we had a lot of fun making Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris. Each day that goes by it gets a little harder, and you have to decide how far down the road you want to go. You have this risk-reward proposition where you have to call for help and extract before you die. You find tombs in this wilderness, and they’re in different places every time. It’s like a survival experience, in that you have to deal with hunger and cold and you’ll die if you don’t find resources to help with those things. Likewise, that’s different every time you’ve played it. It’s similar to endurance mode, which we had already, but we’ve added co-op to endurance mode when you’re out in the Siberian wilderness. It plays differently every time you go through it. As Lara deals with the legal battles by day, she struggles with a different conflict at night, with zombies taking over the manor. It’s the psychological version of reclaiming the manor. We also have Lara’s Nightmare, one of our replayable expedition modes. She has to explore these spaces and unravel a bit of her own history. This is Lara’s first return home after a long time, and it’s almost a tomb raid in her own home. In flashbacks you experience some of the memories that come back to her as she explores her home.Īs much as it’s a classic element, we do bring the manor into a sort of post-reboot lens. Again, revealing a bit of what makes her tick. But also, in doing that, you get to see aspects of Lara’s childhood. You end up exploring the manor in search of anything that might prove that you’re the rightful heir. Her uncle claims that he’s the rightful heir, essentially, that he should retain ownership because her mother’s disappeared. Her ownership of the manor is contested in this story chapter. We see Lara coming home to the manor and ultimately inheriting her birthright. We envisioned it as part of Lara’s character, almost like Batman finding the cave. It appeared in the cinematics from Rise, but it was never playable. With the inspiration of both the origin story and nostalgia, we decided to set it in Croft Manor. We decided to do an hour-plus story chapter. One thing people often ask for is story DLC. It will come with a new downloadable content mission, Blood Ties, where you can explore Croft manor. Now Square Enix is celebrating 20 years of the icon, with the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration on October 11 on the PlayStation 4 and PC. The Tomb Raider franchise has sold over 46 million copies worldwide and inspired one of the most successful video game film adaptations in history, with a trio of Angelina Jolie films grossing over $300 million at the global box office. The Tomb Raider franchise is turning 20 years old, but the reboot of the famous adventure character is still barely tapping into the stories about the formative years of the swaggering Tomb Raider, Hughes said in an interview with GamesBeat. Noah Hughes, franchise creative director at Crystal Dynamics, believes that Lara Croft’s story is just getting started. At the event, we will also announce 25 top game startups as the 2024 Game Changers. The pixelation on reds and yellows is especially painful. Instead, bright greens end up looking like pea soup. Speaking of colors, greens aren’t at all vibrant, like on the Samsung Nexus S. Where Android likes use white text on a black background for Settings, MOTOBLUR has inverted that to hide the problems associated with that color combination. The PenTile technology does best when displaying shades of blue, and so MOTOBLUR has ditched Gingerbread’s green and black motif for a blue one. Motorola seems to have tailored its MOTOBLUR skin with the shortcomings of the screen in mind. When playing games like Angry Birds, or scrolling through home screens, there’s a shadowing that occurs with fast moving elements across the screen. Scrolling white text on a black background results in a hideous effect. It’s significantly poorer than the display shared by the DROID and DROID 2 Global. A high resolution display is usually very welcome, but the PenTile screen technology Motorola incorporates is decidedly unwelcome. The most controversial aspect of the DROID 3 (and other Motorola phones of this generation) is it’s qHD (quarter HD at 960x540) display. And its internals, featuring a dual-core 1 Ghz processor, enable a smooth user experience. The DROID 3 runs Gingerbread 2.3, a step up from Froyo 2.2 on DROID and DROID 2 Global. Because I incorporate numbers into my passwords (using password recipes), signing into my various accounts was much more pleasant with the new keyboard. The slide-out keyboard feels great, with an additional fifth row dedicated to numbers. This phone feels solid, and the larger screen size (increased to 4 inches from 3.7 inches) is a plus. The build quality is closer to the original DROID. Overall, I’ve been happy with my purchase. Not wanting to wait for the DROID Bionic, or Samsung Galaxy S II, I pulled the trigger and bought an unsubsidized DROID 3 on launch day. I planned to upgrade as soon as a better phone came out. Overall, the DROID 2 Global’s CPU covers up for a lot of unforced errors on the part of Motorola. The typography is sloppy, particularly in the status bar. In other words, the DROID 2 Global doesn’t feel like a gun. Its back is covered in cheap plastic, and the plastic front bezel is painted as fake chrome. Second, the DROID 2 Global’s build quality is atrocious. The 1.2 Ghz CPU and dedicated GPU provide a welcome upgrade over the original DROID. The DROID 2 GlobalĪbout a month ago, I bought a used DROID 2 Global on eBay. I had planned to wait for the DROID Bionic, but its launch was delayed with no firm date announced. I rooted it, ran a custom Gingerbread ROM, and dabbled with overclocking. I was thrilled to switch to it after two years on AT&T with an iPhone 3G.īut earlier this year, the DROID started showing its age. And it’s the first and only phone on Verizon to run stock Android. The DROID literally saved Motorola, and propelled Android OS to the pole position it occupies today in the smartphone market. “It feels like a gun,” remarked a colleague upon holding it. Released seven months before the iPhone 4, it sports a high resolution display with nearly invisible pixels. Here are my DROID, DROID 2 Global, and DROID 3: I’ve used the DROID 2 Global for the past month. I used the original DROID from the summer of 2010 until a month ago. I ordered the DROID 3 from Verizon Wireless on Thursday July 7, the day it was announced, and it was delivered the next day. There are barely any DROID 3 reviews on the Web, so I thought I’d try my hand at gadget blogging. When it comes to savory snacks in general, I also look to cheese as a go to and in the case of these cheese broomsticks, a salty and crunchy pretzel is the perfect complement. I've left my desk and MacBook Pro multiple times, bringing my iPad to the kitchen, living room, or even front balcony, and continued working from there with my Pencil and an external keyboard. The lack of wires really does give you a freedom to set up a workspace wherever your heart desires.īut here's the real kicker, and one I suspect will appeal to people with less mobile computers: Because Luna works over Wi-Fi, you can move away from your primary computer and still use your iPad as a second screen. I've worked outside on the grass I've sat on balconies and in the back seats of cars. In contrast, I've brought Luna out to various cafés in Montréal with my MacBook Pro and iPad with no problem. Working at a café, I often felt one step away from the folks who brought in iMacs with external keyboards and mice - when your electronics and wires are taking up more of the table than your food or beverages, you've basically created a mini-office for yourself. Duet Display, despite its technical achievements, always felt clunky because you had to plug your iPad into your Mac to make it work. As such, Luna owners will instead be able to launch one of those programs and use all of their multitouch tricks, shortcuts, and tools with an external display canvas, rather than a mirrored one. While the Luna app doesn't have all of Astropad's many touch features built in, it still offers a fair amount of multitouch support for interacting with macOS: You can tap to select or tap and drag to resize windows two-finger drag to scroll through windows and two-finger pinch or spread to zoom.Īnd when the Luna module officially launches next May, Astropad and Astropad Studio will both get software updates to enable external display support. Astropad Studio's Magic Gestures took that one step further, allowing users to build custom shortcuts based on finger input and pencil interaction. macOS isn't designed to be touch-sensitive, to be sure, but there's something to be said about being able to quickly select regions or pinch to zoom on a Photoshop canvas. When Astropad first launched in 2015, it blew me away in large part because of its cohesive touch and Pencil support. Luna gives you a touch-sensitive Mac screen The only time I really saw significant lag or screen degradation was when I brought my iPad Pro across the apartment to continue working in the living room - and even then, the screen would restore to pixel-perfect quality at rest. When you're moving windows or typing text, you'll get a momentary pop of pixelation as Luna redraws the screen, but it's often almost invisible in everyday use. HiDPI mode looks gorgeous: When the machines are at rest, you can't tell the difference between the Mac's native screen and the iPad Pro's simulated external display. The latter option can be a little small for people with poor eyesight, but it's an amazing alternative to have while on the road, especially if you need more space than a laptop screen can provide. On a 10.5-inch iPad Pro, that means the option of having 1112x834 HiDPI (2x) resolution, or using the iPad's full pixel grid to run a 2224x1668 monitor. Luna's HiDPI 2x mode (left) and 1x "giant screen" mode (right) When purchasing new things, consumers should concentrate on the product's longevity. These models are versatile and will have you reaching for them more often. ✔️ Additional features: Some mini food processors come with disks that allow you to slice and shred. Look for models with at least high and low speeds for control when working with tough or delicate items. Our pros prefer those with a pulse function, which allows you to better control your chopping and prevents over-processing. ✔️ Controls and speeds: Look for simple controls like large buttons or an easy-to-turn dial - some even operate just by pressing the top of the device. Pay attention to how the lid locks on as well: You want a tight seal so you can make a vinaigrette and puree sauces. You want the bowl to be compact enough that all the ingredients will reach the blade, but not so small that you have to chop in a million batches. ✔️ Size and seal: A 2-cup capacity is ideal for a mini food processor. This list includes some of our top-tested favorites as well picks that we haven't yet gotten our hands on but that come from Lab-trusted brands we've thoroughly assessed based on years of experience with kitchen appliances. In recent years, we've tested over 30 food processors, including mini versions. For this list, we focused solely on stand-alone mini food processors - but many immersion blenders come with quality processing attachments with a similar capacity, and some full-size food processors come with a second, smaller bowl (though we've found they are more prone to leaking). When we test food processors, we look for models that chop evenly, have intuitive controls and are easy to clean. The Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab experts test all kinds of products for prepping food. They mean you don't have to have great skills with a chef's knife and are easier to clean than a blender. Mini food processors are also useful for smaller batches of items, like herbs, nuts, salsas, pestos and vinaigrettes as well as tasks like prepping homemade baby food. A full-size food processor can be worth the kitchen real estate, but it has a large footprint, which is less ideal for apartment kitchens or dorm rooms. Whether you're just chopping an onion for a soup, quickly grating some Parmesan or plowing through a mountain of veggies because you meal prep like a pro, a mini food processor is a compact and handy way to speed up your cooking. We removed discontinued products and added new picks from Black + Decker, Zyliss and Hamilton Beach. To ensure the longevity of your saw, use water to help keep the blade cool while cutting. With either option, it’s important to use a steady hand and take your time to make the cleanest possible cuts. With the router attachment, you’ll need to adjust the depth of the bit to ensure that you don’t cut too deep, as this can cause splintering. With the spiral saw attachment, you should clamp the plywood in a secure position and make sure the blade is sharp for an accurate cut. You can use it to cut plywood with either a spiral saw or a router attachment. A RotoZip is basically a rotary tool with a variety of attachments that you can use to drill, cut, grind, sand, or route just about any material. It offers excellent versatility when taking on a variety of projects and can be used to quickly and easily complete many tasks. In short, a spiral saw can be used for a variety of applications, from precision cutting to surface preparation. They are much safer than many other saw blades and are often preferred when working with delicate material and intricate shapes. Spiral saws can also be helpful when precision shaping and cutting edges. With its gentle blade, it is particularly useful for removing paint, rust, and other surface dirt and imperfections. This tool is also excellent for quick, efficient cleaning and surface preparation of many materials. Its ability to quickly cut through a variety of materials means it can often be used instead of angle grinders, jigsaws and other saws. It is also very effective at quickly sawing through wood, tile, metal, laminates, fiberglass, plastics and other materials. This makes it extremely useful for cutting circles and curved shapes. The spiral saw utilizes a circular blade that is attached to the end of a flexible shaft that twists and turns when you move the handle of the saw. Depending on the type of blade you use, the tool can saw, grind, sand, drill, and route through a variety of materials. What can you do with a spiral saw?Ī spiral saw is a versatile and powerful tool that can be used for a variety of uses. Whether it’s cutting drywall to give your walls a smooth look or even creating intricate designs and accents in plastic, you’ll find the RotoZip is a great tool for any job. Additionally, it can be used to give a smooth finish to your projects thanks to its angled depth stop, which allows you to control how deep the holes are that you’re cutting.Īs a bonus, it also comes with a variable-speed feature which lets you choose the best cutting speed for your particular material. The RotoZip is one of the most versatile tools out there and can be used for many different tasks, including drywall and tile cutting. With its powerful motor, the RotoZip quickly and accurately cuts through materials while its advanced guide system keeps it on track and the dust collection system keeps the particles from becoming airborne. It’s a versatile tool that’s great for remodeling and home improvement projects like installing new cabinets or door frames. It can be used to create anything from curved shapes and circles to straight lines and intricate designs. The right tool for the right job should be a wood workers mantra.Ī router is not a saw and a saw is not a router.A RotoZip is a tool primarily used for cutting materials such as drywall, plywood, masonry, and even plastic. I would rather replace a jig saw blade then a router bit. If you only used the router to cut out the templated piece, you would have to make multiple passes with the router, extending the bit a 1/4 or so at a time, cutting the full diameter of the bit each pass. Not to mention the noise and amount of chips far surpasses that of a jig saw.įor instance, you have a template, you trace the template onto a piece of wood, you rough cut it out with a jig saw or band saw and then you use the template and router to flush trim the rough cut edges in a single pass. You cannot cut a 3/4 piece of wood in one pass - you will burn your router bit. I'm not talking about a trim router or Rotozip type tool, but a full size 1.5HP and greater router. Using a router freehand is difficult to control and somewhat dangerous - which may be an understatement. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. A jigsaw is primarily used freehand following some outline, but hardly ever using a jig or held in place. The router is primarily used in conjunction with fences, jigs, held in place (router table) but hardly ever freehand. Mitigate this by keeping total rider weight as low as possible (don't sit three kids on this thing), do not rapidly shift directions while in motion, allow cooling periods between battery changes, just take it easy and it'll last longer. Expect to wear out gearboxes and motors more quickly when you apply extra voltage. Secondary Warning: Overvolting is hard on stock drivetrain components. If you are unsure of any of this, DON'T DO IT. Stock batteries have internal thermal fuses in them, so changing batteries necessitates adding an inline fuse holder. Any time you add an aftermarket battery to a BPRO, you NEED a fuse. SUPER IMPORTANT: No matter what battery mods you do to a kids ride-on, you need an inline fuse. However, to replace the Power Wheels car battery, use two small jumper wires to connect the positive end of one battery to the negative end of the other. One is using a single 24V battery and the other is converting two 12V batteries together into a 24 volt battery. Soldering Iron, Mini screwdriver set, Wire Strippers, Crimpers, Mini Pliers, magnetic parts dish, Multimeterįuse Holder (absolutely vital), 30A ATC Fuses, 10ga wire, Heat Sinks (optional, but help keep motors cooler for longer life), 18v Batteries (although you ideally have extras of these laying around if you're doing this mod), and either a broken tool or extra battery charger to salvage the battery socket from. There are two ways you can convert a 12V battery to a 24V battery. I don't always use all of them, but some of the handiest stuff is: Here's an overview of the tool set you'll need to complete a project like this. This is a relatively simple mod that will add about 50% more speed to your kid's BPRO. Today I'll be converting a Power Wheels battery-powered ride-on toy from 12v sealed lead power to 18v lithium ion power. |
